Board-Certified Orthodontist at BirchTree Orthodontics, Newark, California
Your Orthodontist in Newark, Fremont, and Union City
Dr. Manu Sharma is a board-certified orthodontist and the owner of BirchTree Orthodontics in Newark, California. With over 13 years of clinical experience across multiple dental disciplines, she provides braces, Invisalign, and advanced orthodontic care for children, teens, and adults throughout the Tri-City area.
Dr. Sharma acquired the practice from Dr. Andrew C. Wong, who served Bay Area families for over 35 years. Under her leadership, BirchTree Orthodontics continues to build on the trust that generations of patients have come to rely on, while incorporating the latest treatment technology and techniques into everyday care.
Education and Training
Dr. Sharma earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) from Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, where she graduated with honors and was named to the Dean’s List. During her time at BU, she served as President of the Student Body for two consecutive years and received the Exceptional Service and Leadership Award from the dental school in 2013.
She completed her orthodontic specialty residency at Georgia School of Orthodontics, one of the country’s most respected orthodontic training programs. During residency, she earned the Nathaniel Glover Leadership and Professionalism Scholarship and the Surgical Case Management Scholarship for her work in complex surgical orthodontic planning. She passed the American Board of Orthodontics examination with one of the highest scores in the country.
Her combined training spans general dentistry, endodontics, oral surgery, prosthodontics, and orthodontics, giving her a clinical foundation that few orthodontists can match.
A Background That Makes a Difference
Many orthodontists enter their specialty directly after dental school. Dr. Sharma took a different path. Before pursuing orthodontics, she spent years in clinical practice performing restorative work, root canals, extractions, and prosthetic rehabilitation. That experience fundamentally shapes how she approaches treatment today.
When she evaluates a new patient, whether a child coming in for an early orthodontic evaluationor an adult considering braces for the first time, she is not looking at tooth alignment alone. She assesses gum health, existing restorations, jaw function, airway considerations, and long-term dental stability. This comprehensive perspective helps her build treatment plans that account for the full picture, not just the position of the teeth.
For families comparing orthodontic providers, this breadth of clinical training is a meaningful distinction. An orthodontist who has personally performed the procedures that precede and follow orthodontic treatment can anticipate challenges, coordinate more effectively with your general dentist, and make better decisions when complex situations arise.
Treatments and Specialties
Dr. Sharma provides the full scope of orthodontic care. She works with traditional metal braces and clear ceramic braces for patients who prefer a fixed approach, and offers Invisalign clear aligners for those looking for a more discreet option. She is Advanced CAARE Invisalign certified and treats patients with Invisalign across a range of complexity levels.
For younger patients, she places special emphasis on early evaluation and Phase 1 treatment, including the use of palatal expanders and functional appliances to guide jaw growth during critical development windows. Invisalign Teen is available for teenagers who want clear aligners that fit around school, sports, and everyday life.
Dr. Sharma also manages complex cases involving surgical orthodontics, including temporary anchorage devices (TADs) and orthognathic surgical planning. During her residency, she led the orthognathic case planning program in collaboration with faculty at Emory University and Augusta University, treating patients whose conditions required coordinated surgical and orthodontic intervention.
Professional Affiliations
Dr. Sharma is an active member of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), the American Dental Association (ADA), the California Dental Association (CDA), and the American Association of Women Dentists (AAWD). She maintains current BLS/CPR certification and is committed to continuing education that keeps her practice aligned with the latest evidence-based research in orthodontics.
Giving Back
Community service has been a consistent part of Dr. Sharma’s career. She volunteered at Father Joe’s Villages dental clinic in San Diego for four years, providing care to individuals experiencing homelessness. She participated in the California Dental Medicaid Program for nine years, helping expand access to dental care for underserved populations across the state.
During her time at Boston University, Dr. Sharma was selected as an Albert Schweitzer Fellow, a nationally recognized service program that places health professions students in community organizations serving vulnerable populations.
Outside the Office
When I am not with patients, I am usually spending time with my family. My son Kabir keeps me sharp with trivia challenges and board games, and my husband Jay still insists he can win at Scrabble. He has yet to prove it.
I chose orthodontics because I believe a confident smile can change the way someone carries themselves through the world. Whether you are a parent exploring early treatment options for your child, a teenager weighing Invisalign Teen against braces, or an adult ready to finally invest in the smile you have always wanted, I would love to meet you and your family.
