Retainer Wear Schedule (Most Patients)

  • First 3 months — Full-time wear (day and night), except when eating, brushing, or playing contact sports.
  • After 3 months — Nighttime wear only (while sleeping).

Dr. Sharma will give you a custom schedule at your debond appointment. Some patients need longer full-time wear depending on their original bite.

Daily Retainer Care & Cleaning

  • Brush your retainers every day with a soft toothbrush and cool water.
  • For deeper cleaning, soak them in Retainer Brite or a similar retainer cleaner (available at our office or most pharmacies).
  • Never use hot water, toothpaste, or put them in the dishwasher — heat warps the plastic and ruins the fit.

Common Mistakes That Break or Lose Retainers

  • Wrapping them in a napkin or paper towel — they get thrown away (this happens daily across the country!).
  • Leaving them in a pocket — they get crushed when you sit down.

  • Letting dogs or pets near them — dogs love chewing retainers.
